Who is Relevant Buildings?

Relevant Buildings has a mission to offer modern living with relevant housing options. The building company offers multifamily and single-family homes.

As custom container home builders in Oregon, the company upcycles shipping containers to create residential homes with a prefab design and modern amenities.

Shipping container homes require much less lumber than a stick-built home while offering a durable shell with a small footprint.

All homes in the Relevant Buildings portfolio are zero-energy options.

Carl, the founder of Relevant Buildings, drives the company with his passion for offering a more innovative way to build homes. The idea behind the company came from tragedy. Carl was building a pole barn.

He put a month’s worth of work into the pole barn and spent $45,000.

But, one day, an arsonist burned down the pole barn when it was in mid-construction. It was then that he had an epiphany. There had to be a better way to build a home or building. It dawned on to him that millions of shipping containers never return overseas and just sit there “collecting rust.”

And if his pole barn had been made out of metal, it would not have burned down in the fire.

Today, Relevant Buildings operates out of 15901 Park Place Ct. in Oregon City, Oregon.

Relevant Buildings Floor Plans

Relevant offers numerous floor plans to meet the needs of consumers. The most common floor plans include:

De Lux River 40’

The De Lux River is a 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom model that offers 1,177 square feet of space. The unit connected two 540’ containers plus a center bridge that’s built on-site to connect the two units together.

De Lux River is part of the building company’s hybrid series.

A hybrid design means that the containers are blended together with wood to create a natural-looking home. Ceiling height is an expansive 12- to 13-feet high and bridges the containers. The bridge incorporates a clerestory window that sheds light on the main living area.

The floor plan has:

  • Level 1 with 1,024 square feet of space
  • Loft with 153 square feet of space

Suite Spot City 40’

The Suite Spot City is a 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom home that uses two 40’ containers that offer a total living space of 663 square feet. A narrower design enables you to erect the Suite Spot in tight, small city lots where space is minimal.

Perfect for an ADU, the Suite Spot is ready for solar and has enough space for 7 kW of power on the floating awning.

When it comes to practicality, the Suite Spot provides a beautiful, open floor plan with extensive use of windows and doors to brighten the home’s interior.

Note: The term “fully furnished” does not mean the same thing as ‘fully furnished’ in terms of rental homes or an Air BnB. Instead, fully furnished is meant to describe a unit that has all of the following completed upon delivery:

  • Drywall
  • Paint
  • Flooring
  • Electric
  • Plumbing
  • Cabinets
  • Appliances

The thing we like about the Relevant company is that they can help you transform your building project with shipping containers.  They are flexible in terms of design options and how to make use of containers in any project.

What is the delivery zone?

Most buildings are sent to Idaho, Washington and Oregon. The company states that the biggest hurdle is permitting to ship long distances.

How tall are the containers?

The builder uses High Que models, which are 9’6” tall versus the 8’6” standard seen in basic containers.

Are the containers new or used?

Both “single-use” and well-used models are available. Market conditions can change rapidly and impact availability.

Are units insulated?

Yes. Closed-cell spray foam is used to insulate the shipping containers. In fact, the insulation is 10% higher than a new home standard.

If you have any questions about the homes built by Relevant Buildings, the company is responsive and will work to answer your questions quickly.
