The Vipp Shelter Tiny Prefab

Night time

Vipp is a third-generation, family-owned company based in Brygge, Copenhagen. Along with prefab homes, the company also offers kitchen products, bathroom products, lighting, furniture and home accessories.

Vipp’s reach is wide, expanding into 30 countries. They also have a second showroom in New York.

Among all of Vipp’s prefab homes, the Shelter is the most popular.

What is the Vipp Shelter?

Kasper Egelund, Vipp CEO and third generation owner, says the Vipp Shelter was inspired by the quote: “We live in the city, but dream of the wild.” The goal, he said, was the create a livable design object that could be placed anywhere in the world.

Melding nature with modern design, the Shelter tiny prefab home feels like you’re living comfortably in wild.

The Shelter spans just 55 square meters (592.015 square feet) and has a two-person sleeping capacity.

Weighing 25 tons, the home features:

  • Sliding windows
  • Floor heating
  • Fireplace
  • Dry-pressed ceramic floors
  • 9mm plywood walls with 3mm wool felt

The outer steel grid of the home contains 10,000 screws, and each one serves a purpose.

The bedroom, which has just enough space to sleep two people comfortably, allows you to fall asleep under the stars. The skylights and windows beside the bed allow natural light to flood the space. The integrated blinds give you control over how much sunlight or moonlight can enter the room.

The sliding windows in the living area blur the lines between your home and the great outdoors. The panoramic views offer an unmatched view of the outdoors from just about anywhere in the home.

The Vipp Shelter actually has two levels. Only the bathroom and the bed loft are on the second level, which is shielded from the main living space.

The entire structure is comprised of steel and glass. The interior, exterior and all of the included accessories and components are slate-colored. Vipp chose a dark color palette because it allows the inhabitants to focus on what’s important: nature.

The steel grid provides structural support for the two-level space.

The Shelter was designed to be a “getaway object” that’s “plug-and-play.” There are no options with this tiny home, but everything is included. Vipp has eliminated the guesswork.

“The objective was not to make a house or mobile home,” says Morten Bo Jensen, Vipp chief designer. “Vipp is rooted in the manufacture of industrial objects, so the term shelter is a typology that allows us to define this hybrid as a spacious, functionally generic, living object.”

Jensen admits that he’s not an architect. The Shelter has been conceived more like a product than a piece of architecture. The company didn’t start with a piece of land and customize the home based on the natural surroundings.

The Shelter is truly minimalistic in design and function. Vipp has taken an analog approach to home design with this model. In the cold winter, you heat up the fireplace, which is centrally positioned for equal heat distribution. In the hot summer, you slide open the parallel windows for “natural air conditioning.”

If the home is placed deep in the forest, the leaves on the trees will serve as shade. In the winter, when all of the leaves have fallen, the additional sunlight will be absorbed by the home’s black exterior to help keep the heat from the fireplace inside.
